City may move homeless from underpass to shelter

Mayor Ray Nagin's administration appears to be preparing to move the city's biggest homeless colony, a highly visible collection of people and bedrolls just off Canal Street, to a Central City emergency shelter.

Some City Council members and leading advocates for the homeless say they are not aware of the plan, although the director of the New Orleans Mission confirmed that the city accepted his proposal on Friday.

Nagin alluded to a plan for the homeless last week during an appearance on WWL-TV. He said he had recently seen a man in the encampment on Claiborne Avenue beneath Interstate 10 "drinking beer and just flipping the bird to citizens."

Calling the scene "a mess," Nagin said that before the end of February, the city will begin enforcing its "habitation laws."

"We've got more mental cases out there," the mayor said.

Cis' blog roundup - Friday

Gus has no business stirring things up any more over at P&Z. Fellow Commissioners Rick Currie and Katie Brodie should put a stop to it now. This whacky move reflects on them, too. If Gus wants to audition for a job for next January, I'm sure Kathryn Tacke at Job Service has a list of jobs for which he's more qualified.

Only GritsforBreakfast noted the posting, pointing to a Dallas Morning News editorial criticizing the agency's diversion of funds for correctional officers to office renovation.

On Sunday, however, Austin civil rights watchdog Jim Harrington took issue with the job posting — noting that applications are only being taken for five business days and alleging that the commission had "buried" the posting on its site.

The job posting is not prominently displayed on the TYC site. You have to search the jobs alphabetically to find it. And the window from job posting to closing is, clearly, small. The job pays up to $160,000 per year and suggests applicants have the "ability to maintain high tolerance to mental stress."

Three weeks until it begins anew

I am really excited about the potential of this season, but that is what every February holds. I am hoping that they can all play to their potential and the season will last into October. The 3 "old men" need to bring all they have, and the young guys need to learn all they can from Smolts and Glavine one last time around. Our offence will be fine if Chipper can stay healthy. Lets get football finished so my favorite sport can start. Play Ball!!!

Does anyone know how many Braves games will be on TBS this year, if any. Living in the city that just lost the R-braves, I don't get Sports South, so I will be watching the games on my computer.
