Fire victims prepare to rebuild lives

City fire investigators were still searching for the cause of the fire yesterday, and had not ruled out the possibility that it was set, a fire department spokesman said.

Investigators also continued to probe the source of another fire that killed two people in South Boston on New Year's Eve. Yesterday, former residents of the Emerson Street condominium complex were allowed back in the towering brick structure for the first time since they fled the smoky blaze with little more than the clothes they were wearing.

The two fires left 50 people homeless, 30 in South Boston and 20 in Hyde Park's Logan Square section, and caused a combined estimated $6.5 million in damages, $5 million in South Boston and $1.5 million in Hyde Park, officials said. The Hyde Park fire destroyed or damaged eight businesses in a landmark, three-story building on River Street, across from the Hyde Park municipal building.

Monday wild card

I wanted to give you some information on what some of the other Cities that host Ironman events require. Please do not think that I am picking a fight with someone who buys ink by the barrel. I would like to give you information about Ironman events in other areas and cities."

Kids Huff Freon to Get High

CARBONDALE, Ill. - During these 'dog days of summer' air conditioning units are working overtime trying to keep homes and offices cooled down.

But many of those air conditioning units are becoming the target of kids wanting to drain the freon gas from inside and inhale it, sometimes with deadly results.

"They feel a euphoria, light-headiness and they may pass out. But it's that euphoria that they're going after. Unfortunately what these kids don't know is there is long term damage to the body from breathing in freon gas," said Doctor Donna Carney at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Authorities say the way the kids are using the gas to get high is by placing a plastic bag over their head. Then they fill the bag with freon gas. It's heavier than oxygen so it forces the oxygen out of the bag, leaving only the dangerous gas.

Forget biofuel, try a car that runs on air

A car that runs on air and releases no pollutants into the atmosphere at low speeds could be on sale in India as soon as this year.

The three-seat fibreglass OneCAT weighs only 350kg (770lb) and is expected to be priced at about £2,500. The engine technology is backed by Tata, the Indian conglomerate that last month unveiled the world’s cheapest car, the £1,250 Nano.

Refuelling involves topping up on compressed air, which is used to power the OneCAT’s piston engine. In a couple of minutes - and at a cost of as little as £1 - the vehicle is ready to travel another 200 to 300 kilometres (125 to 185 miles), its inventors said.

The vehicle, which burns small amounts of conventional fuels at higher speeds, has been developed by Moteur Development International (MDI), a French-based, family owned group that has been working on an "air car" for the past decade.
