Take steps to protect computers, electronics

Consider purchasing protective equipment which can help against lethal storm and electrical conditions. These include: Surge suppressors designed to lower the momentary high voltage of a surge or spike.

Voltage regulators maintain voltage output within narrow limits.

Isolation transformers prevent noise on a circuit from being passed to your equipment.

Un-interruptible Power Supply (UPS) maintains power to critical loads during power outages.

Surge Protectors: Make sure the suppressor has 3-way protection and is UL (Underwriters Laboratory) listed for compliance with the 1449 TVSS (Transient Voltage Surge Suppressor) standard. Features of the plug-in type surge protector include multiple outlets, on/off switches, audible alarms, and indicator lights to let you know the suppressor is working, and connections for telephone or data cable lines.

Selecting the right blower and pump for fuel-cell application

Fuel cells hold the promise of clean, less expensive and environment-friendly energy. They offer a lot of flexibility that is not available with more conventional power technology. They have potential application in a wide range of industrial, commercial, residential and recreational products, where a compact, reliable electric power source is an important or attractive feature.

Critical to the performance and efficiency of these new fuel-cell systems are motors, blowers and pumps that can provide outstanding efficiency, reliable service, safe operation and a broad range of performance capabilities. All these features are offered by US company Ametek Rotron, one of the leaders in the field. HOW FUEL CELLS OPERATE

Fuel cells are dc power generators. They generate electricity through an electrochemical process that converts the energy stored in a fuel directly into electricity.

EU bid to freeze out patio heaters

They have only been popular in the UK for little more than a decade, but patio heaters could become history if MEPs vote to ban them today.

The EU parliament is expected to back a resolution requiring the use of appliances with low energy efficiency to be phased out.

Patio heaters are specifically targeted in the motion, which calls on the EU to act urgently and introduce minimum standards for energy efficiency on such appliances as air-conditioning, television "decoder" boxes and light bulbs. It also calls for the abolition of stand-by mode on electrical appliances.

If the ban comes into effect and is enforced, it could cost pubs, restaurants and caterers in the UK up to £250m in lost revenue per year.

The use of outdoor heaters increased with the new UK smoking ban, as well as growing use at home as garden accessories for the British summer.

Following fire, an outpouring of Old St. George memories

Rosalie Feldman grew up near Old St. George Church, went to grade school next door and got married there May 3, 1958.

As she watched the church's twin spires burn on television, then collapse Friday night, Feldman was devastated.

"We were able to go to daily Mass there," Feldman, who now lives in Forest Park, said Saturday. "One of the most beautiful things to me was the canopy above the altar and the life-sized crucifix."

CSU team to show its bulls today

With his thick brimmed black cowboy hat above his brow, Scott Martell proudly follows in his grandfather's boots. Martell describes his grandfather as a really good cowboy and believes the cowboy lifestyle was bred into him.

Though it's not always a leisurely life, it suits him well. Originally from Hudson, Martell has been around horses and cattle his whole life. So when picking a career, working with animals seemed natural.

"It's easier to get along with animals," he said. "They are a lot simpler and I'm a simple guy."

And while that may be the case, the cattle industry is not nearly as simple as one would think. As Martell puts it, people don't always realize the education that is needed to stay competitive within the industry. At one point, Martell considered becoming a veterinarian, but ended up switching paths.
