WSB cancels July Fourth Parade

After nearly 50 years, WSB-TV is discontinuing its annual "Salute 2 America" July 4 parade. The family-friendly festival of floats, marching bands, balloons, TV stars and military personnel annually wound its way through the streets of downtown for 47 years.

Instead, the Atlanta ABC network affiliate plans to expand its metro area coverage on the patriotic holiday this year to include more geographically diverse July 4 celebrations.

"When the parade began, Atlanta was a very small town and now our coverage goals are very different," explained WSB-TV general manager Bill Hoffman in an interview with the AJC on Thursday. "We're trying to broaden our coverage over the July Fourth holiday."

Added Channel 2 program director Art Rogers via a statement: "As a native Atlantan, I've personally witnessed the incredible growth of the metro area.

Group aims for HVAC ‘yes’

Collecting donations, running ads and gathering new members along the way, Care For Kids continues to mount an organized effort to get the schools $3.35 million bond referendum approved for air conditioning and other improvements.

Meeting Wednesday, group members expressed concern not only for lack of A/C, but reports from teachers that the heating system at Hoover Elementary leaves some rooms still cold while teachers in others prop open windows to cool off.

We need to focus on the heat part of it, member Jeni Schiele said.

The group is organizing a petition drive to get a satellite voting booth set up at the March 7 elementary school carnival in hopes of pulling in more voters.

The group plans to meet with an architect Feb.

Heat Pumps 'Go With The Flow' To Boost Output

ScienceDaily (Jan. 29, 2008) — Air-source heat pumps typically deliver 1 1/2 to three times more heating energy to a home than the electric energy they consume. This is possible because heat pumps move heat rather than convert it from a fuel (as combustion heating systems do). National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) researchers are working to improve the performance of these energy superstars even further by providing engineers with computer-based tools for optimizing heat exchanger designs.

NJ Senate approves abolishing death penalty

Four teenagers are accused in a robbery and assault of students near the Rowan University campus in Glassboro.

The case has some similarities to one in October, when Rowan sophomore Donald "Donnie" Farrell of Boonton was killed in a robbery attempt. But Bernie Weisenfeld, a spokesman for the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office, said investigators have determined that the cases are not connected.
