Europe Wracked By Extreme Weather, Over 500 Die From Heat

Across central and western England, high waters have flooded at least 4,500 homes, threatened many more and left cars submerged.

Crop-harvesting has been delayed and milk production has dropped, triggering fears of possible food shortages.

Flood waters have begun receding in the worst hit areas of England, but the Environment Agency still has six severe flood warnings in effect.

Police grab tagger with an eye for utility poles

A prolific 31-year-old tagger was arrested Thursday, Jan. 31, and hit with nearly three dozen criminal mischief charges in connection with graffiti nailed to utility poles across the city.

Ryan Wendell Birkland was arrested by officers from Portland Police Bureau's Central Precinct Neighborhood Response Team.

The graffiti began showing up on Portland General Electric poles several months ago. A similar style of graffiti resulted in $12,000 worth of damages to the Sherwood Field Water Tank in Washington Park.

During the investigation, Officer Matt Miller, the bureau's graffiti investigator, received several tips about the graffiti that lead officers to Gallery 19, 1339 N.W. 19th Ave. Similar graffiti could be seen through the gallery's windows on display inside the building.

Extra! UIdaho Student Found Shot to Death

Even what little projects are left will REQUIRE tax increases in the future. The Idaho Transporation Department has been gutted. Idaho's entire transportation system has been uprooted and set back years because of this disaster known as GARVEE. What the Legislature should do tomorrow is tell Idaho they made a mistake 2 years ago that has cost too much. They need to gut it completely and ask Governor Otter and ITD to spend the next few months getting things back on track, making transporation the issue of 2008. Meanwhile, the "consultants" who were the beneficiaries of these so-called GARVEE bonds (the people got nothing--NOTHING--from this deal, even though millions have been spent!) can go back to the drawing table. Shame on the Legislature 2 years ago for letting this thing happen when they were put into a corner by our then governor at the last minute, without sufficient information! It was such a scam! Shame on them.

Science Tough Roads Loom Ahead for U.S. Pharmaceutical Giants

This is the reason so many U.S. consumers flock to Canadian pharmacies where they can get the same medications they would purchase in the U.S. at a fraction of the cost. Drug companies have spent millions lobbying congress to prevent the importation of drugs from Canada, not because of safety concerns but because of profit loss. Canada's government negotiates the price for medications sold nationally making them significantly cheaper than buying the same medications here.

The fear for many is that the dropping profit margins will result in less research and development funding, leading to less new drugs being developed. This is not only a concern for disease conditions that have few or no treatments, but a concern for more common conditions requiring antibiotics. Antibiotics that worked well in the past are beginning to lose effectiveness as bacteria and viruses mutate into forms that are resistant to current antibiotics.

Carrier invests in DeWitt campus

Driving into Syracuse from Carrier Circle, visitors drive past a bombed-out-looking hotel and weedy parking lots across the street from Carrier Corp.

Friday, Carrier announced plans for a $5 million renovation of its site. The air conditioning and refrigeration giant wants to sell off the parking lots, demolish an old building and upgrade the facade on its building facing Thompson Road.

And while Carrier's plans won't take care of the dilapidated Howard Johnson's across from its Thompson Road campus, economic developers say it will go a long way toward sprucing up the neighborhood.

Carrier President Geraud Darnis revealed the company's plans to its 1,500 employees during a visit to the DeWitt campus Friday morning.

"Our goal is to turn vacant properties into productive assets for the community, while reducing our excess space to make the campus sustainable for the future," he said in a news release.
